Saturday, June 25th.
Today we leave Bellefontaine and head for Illinois after a quick drive through Indiana. It is sunny and the temperature is mild. Saw a young fawn eating beside the highway. Wonder where Momma is. In Decatur, In the temperature is a pleasant 76 degrees. Won’t see temperatures like that in Conroe until October. Surprised to see a small groundhog near the highway near Plymouth, IN as I thought the traffic would be something they would want to avoid. Passed by a pasture of young llamas.
Drove past Valparaiso University and enjoyed a picnic lunch just west of Valparaiso under an unusual tree. The bark had an interesting pattern.
Illinois is a state with a lot of parks. It is also a state with higher gas prices.
We arrived in McHenry, our destination stop in Illinois after traveling on a state highway south of the Chicago area. "State highway" means a lot of stop signs or lights. In some areas it seems the towns paid to have the state highway diverted to go near their downtown to entice us to stop and visit. It would have been a faster trip if we could have driven straight through. Some of this was very pretty with a lot of trees on both sides. There are a lot of Victorian style houses, and I would love to tour them. However they are not for touring as they are private homes.
We find a motel and then head for a place to eat. By doing this we accidentally drive by Zion Lutheran Church which is where we will surprise the Borghardt family and worship tomorrow.
