Today we go to LuVerne to visit the remaining relatives that still live there. Cousin Harold is not home, so we go downtown to the store/cafĂ© where he eats many of his meals and visits with friends on a daily basis. It’s just a short walk, about 2-3 blocks. (But then going to any place in LuVerne is just a short walk as this farming community is only about two miles in length. It once was a thriving little community, but now most businesses are gone. In my memories I still remember the Saturday evenings when everyone gathered in town to shop for groceries and visit, even we children enjoyed these times to visit as Sunday at church was usually the only other time we saw each other.) Harold is not to be found.
We head out to Kathryn and Eugene’s farm. Eugene is 84 years old and still farming…raising crops, but no animals are on his farm these days. Kathryn deals with COPD and relies on a breathing machine many days. Today is a good day for her. She did not need to use the machine while we were there. David enjoys talking about the farm with Eugene. We view photos of their family and I show them a slideshow of my family’s photos using the computer. They have not seen many of my siblings since we were kids so it is interesting for them to see our adult children and our grandchildren.

Time to head to Missouri where we will visit Kathryn’s brothers, Dad’s cousins.
We travel on towards Purdin, MO. First we find a place to stay in Chillicothe, Mo and then on to supper. We purchase gas here at $3.25 gallon!
We stay at the Starlight Motel, circa 1950s or 1960s. It gives me the opportunity to discover the definition of a FIRM mattress. Actually, I should say a VERY FIRM mattress. Can you tell I am missing my feather bed?
This is the view across the highway from the Starlight Motel.
